नागालैंड भारत में चरम पूर्वोत्तर में स्थित है । यह पश्चिम में असम राज्य, अरुणाचल प्रदेश और उत्तर में असम के हिस्से, पूर्व में बर्मा और दक्षिण में मणिपुर की सीमाएँ हैं । इसका क्षेत्रफल 16,579 वर्ग किलोमीटर (6,401 वर्ग मील) है ।

ग्रेट इंडियन हॉर्नबिल राज्य में पाए जाने वाले सबसे प्रसिद्ध पक्षियों में से एक है । तीतर की एक कमजोर प्रजाति बेलीथ का ट्रागोपैन, नागालैंड का राज्य पक्षी है । यह कोहिमा जिले के माउंट जापफू और द्जुकौ घाटी, ज़ुन्हेबोटो जिले में सतोई रेंज और फेक जिले में पफुत्सरो में देखा जाता है । दुनिया में देखे गए मात्र 2500 ट्रागोपनों में से, दज़ुकौ घाटी 1,000 से अधिक का प्राकृतिक आवास है ।
वन प्रकार उष्णकटिबंधीय गीला सदाबहार, उष्णकटिबंधीय नम पर्णपाती, मोंटेन, गीला तापमान और उप-उष्णकटिबंधीय देवदार के जंगलों से मिलकर बनता है । इसका 52% क्षेत्र वन कवर के अधीन है । नागालैंड में पक्षियों की 500 से अधिक प्रजातियां पाई जाती हैं ।
राज्य की पक्षी प्रजातियां दर्ज की गई हैं; ग्रे की अध्यक्षता में मछली ईगल, पीले-rumped Honeyguide, हॉर्नबिल, सफेद पेट वाले बगुले, ब्लीथ ट्रेगोपान, मणिपुर बुश बटेर, लकड़ी, ठीक गोली चलाना, काले-rumped स्विफ्ट, पहाड़ बांस-तीतर, यूरेशियन वुडकॉक, नीले नेप्ड पित्त, 11 Warbler के, Bulbuls, Yuhina के, बैबलर के, नागा Wren-बैबलर, बौना Wren-बैबलर, लकीर छाती और स्पॉट-breasted कृपाण बैबलर, 5 प्रजातियों के हँस थ्रश, Red0 का सामना करना पड़ा Liochichla, Barwing, Fulvetta के, ग्रे Sibia, Minla के, सनबर्ड के, थ्रश और कई और अधिक के लिए देखने के लिए.
