राज्य देश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ वन क्षेत्रों में से एक है (32,000 वर्ग किमी से अधिक वन कवर) । ये पश्चिमी घाट हैं, जो राज्य की लंबाई के साथ पश्चिम में अरब सागर तट के समानांतर चल रहे हैं । दक्षिण में त्रि-राज्य जंक्शन नीलगिरि जैव-क्षेत्र रिजर्व बनाता है, जो शीर्ष वैश्विक जैव-विविधता हॉटस्पॉट में से एक है, और यह मुट्ठी भर राष्ट्रीय उद्यानों की मेजबानी भी करता है, ज्यादातर राज्य के दक्षिणी हिस्सों में । शेष राज्य, पूर्वी तरफ, एक सपाट मैदान है जिसमें दक्कन पठार शामिल है ।

ऊंचाई पश्चिमी तट पर समुद्र तल से उत्तर और उत्तर-पूर्व के अधिकांश में लगभग 300 मीटर, दक्षिण और दक्षिण-पूर्व के अधिकांश में लगभग 600 मीटर और दक्षिण-पूर्व की ओर 900 मीटर+ तक भिन्न होती है जहां पश्चिमी घाट शुरू होते हैं।
