महाराष्ट्र भारत के पश्चिमी प्रायद्वीपीय क्षेत्र में एक राज्य है जो दक्कन पठार के एक बड़े हिस्से पर कब्जा करता है। महाराष्ट्र भारत में दूसरा सबसे अधिक आबादी वाला राज्य है, और साथ ही दुनिया में दूसरा सबसे अधिक आबादी वाला देश उपखंड है । इसका गठन 1 मई 1960 को द्विभाषी बॉम्बे राज्य को विभाजित करके किया गया था, बहुसंख्यक मराठी भाषी महाराष्ट्र और गुजराती भाषी गुजरात में जो 1956 से अस्तित्व में था।

राज्य की राजधानी मुंबई है, जो भारत में सबसे अधिक आबादी वाला शहरी क्षेत्र है । गोदावरी और कृष्णा राज्य की दो प्रमुख नदियाँ हैं । मराठी सबसे व्यापक रूप से बोली जाने वाली भाषा है और राज्य की आधिकारिक भाषा भी है ।

महाराष्ट्र क्षेत्रफल के आधार पर भारत का दूसरा सबसे अधिक आबादी वाला राज्य और तीसरा सबसे बड़ा राज्य है। 307,713 किमी 2 (118,809 वर्ग मील) में फैले, यह पश्चिम में अरब सागर और कर्नाटक, तेलंगाना, गोवा, गुजरात, छत्तीसगढ़, मध्य प्रदेश और केंद्र शासित प्रदेश दादरा और नगर हवेली के भारतीय राज्यों से घिरा है। यह दुनिया की दूसरी सबसे अधिक आबादी वाली उप-राष्ट्रीय इकाई भी है।

इसके 112 मिलियन से अधिक निवासी हैं और इसकी राजधानी मुंबई की आबादी लगभग 18 मिलियन है। नागपुर महाराष्ट्र की दूसरी राजधानी होने के साथ ही इसकी शीतकालीन राजधानी भी है । यह भारतीय संघ के सर्वाधिक औद्योगिक राज्यों में से एक है। पूर्व पश्चिम की लंबाई लगभग 800 किमी (72 डिग्री 6 ‘से 80 डिग्री 9’ ई) और उत्तर से दक्षिण की लंबाई लगभग 700 किमी है। महाराष्ट्र पक्षियों के मामले में भी बहुत प्रचार मे हैं, यहाँ पक्षियो की कई जातिया पाई जाती है।
